Life insurance: where did it all begin?
Life insurance: where did it all begin?
Protecting your family with a life insurance policy is commonplace in the 21st century. But where did the concept come from?
The earliest example of life insurance dates back to Roman times, when a military leader named Caius Marcus formed a ‘burial club’ with his soldiers to fund the cost of a dignified funeral.
Fast forward to the 1700s and life insurance was restricted largely to the wealthy elite. However, it was also used for gambling! Taking out a policy on the life of a famous person (which was legal at the time) became one of the most popular ways to gamble until the Gambling Act of 1774.
Nowadays, life insurance is no longer just for the wealthiest in society, but for anyone seeking to protect their family.
